Build Your DreamMap

Stop Planning. Start Dreaming.

Most people jump straight into planning a trip before they've ever taken the time to dream about where they want to go. That's backwards. Before you compare flights, research hotels, or worry about your budget, you need a vision for the experiences you want to have in your lifetime. That's where a DreamMap comes in.

A DreamMap is a collection of destinations, experiences, and adventures that inspire you. It gives you direction, helps you stay motivated and turns travel from "someday" into a real possibility.

Your DreamMap isn't a bucket list of impossible goals. It's a living document that grows and changes as you discover new places and learn more about yourself as a traveler.

A DreamMap is not a list of places you think you can afford. It's a collection of places that make you feel something.

Why Create a DreamMap?

When people don't know where they want to go, they often end up going nowhere.

A DreamMap helps you:

Most importantly, it reminds you that travel isn't just about vacations. It's about creating experiences and memories that shape your life.

Step 1: Start with a Travel Visualization

Before you write down a single destination, take a few moments to slow down and find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. You can use this worksheet to bring your vision to life. If you would prefer a guided visualization, click here to go on the journey with me.

Close your eyes.

Allow yourself to relax.

Now imagine a map of the world.

As different destinations come into your mind, don’t judge them. Don’t think about cost, vacation time, passports, language barriers or whether they’re realistic right now.

Simply notice how each destination makes you feel.

Pay attention to your emotional response.

There are no right or wrong answers. Sometimes the destinations that create the strongest emotional response are the ones that belong on your DreamMap. Sometimes anxiety doesn’t mean “don’t go.” Sometimes it means “this experience would help me grow.”

As you continue this exercise, begin making a list of the destinations that spark something inside you. Those sparks are clues. Your DreamMap isn’t just about places. It’s about discovering the experiences, cultures, adventures, and moments that call to you.

Once you’ve identified those destinations, write them down without filtering or editing yourself. There is plenty of time later for planning. Right now, your only job is to dream.

Step 2: Ask Yourself These Questions

Think about the experiences that make your heart race a little.

Would you rather:

  • Walk through ancient cities?
  • Relax on a tropical beach?
  • Hike through mountains?
  • Explore castles and palaces?
  • See wildlife in its natural habitat?
  • Wander Christmas markets?
  • Experience different cultures?
  • Taste local foods?
  • Take a train across a country?
  • Visit famous landmarks?
  • Go somewhere completely off the beaten path?

Write down every answer.

Patterns will begin to emerge. You may discover that you’re drawn to history and culture, or maybe nature and adventure keep appearing. Perhaps you dream about food, beaches, hiking, or exploring cities.

There are no wrong answers. The goal is to discover what kind of travel experiences excite you the most.

Step 3: Create Categories

Instead of focusing on countries first, think about experiences. Organizing your dreams into categories helps you understand the type of traveler you are.

Some examples:

Beaches & Islands

History & Culture

Nature & Adventure

Hiking & Walking Trips

Food & Wine

City Escapes

Step 4: Start Building Your Map

Use:

  • Google Maps
  • A paper map
  • Pinterest
  • A notebook
  • A vision board

Drop a pin on every place that interests you. Don’t worry about how you’ll get there or when you’ll go. Just collect dreams.

Over time, you’ll have a visual representation of the places calling your name. Some people are surprised by how many destinations begin to appear once they allow themselves to dream.

Step 5: Pick Your Top Five

Once you’ve brainstormed dozens of possibilities, narrow your list to five destinations you’d be most excited to visit.

Ask yourself:

  • Which destination do I think about most often?
  • Which one creates the strongest emotional response?
  • Which experience would change me the most?
  • Which destination would I regret not seeing?
  • Which one feels like it’s calling me right now?

These five become your current priorities.

Remember, your DreamMap can evolve. New destinations may appear and priorities may change over time. That’s part of the journey.

Step 6: Take One Small Action

A dream becomes a goal when you take action.

Choose one:

  • Apply for a passport
  • Start a travel savings fund
  • Join a travel community
  • Research flights
  • Read a guidebook
  • Learn a few words of the language
  • Build a rough budget

The action doesn’t have to be big. It just has to move you forward. Small steps create momentum and momentum creates confidence. Confidence turns dreams into reality.

Remember...

Your DreamMap is not a contract. it's a source of inspiration. Some destinations will move up the list. Others will disappear completely.

New dreams will appear. That's the beauty of travel. The goal isn't to see every place in the world, but to create a life filled with experiences that matter to you.

So close your eyes. Take a deep breath and allow yourself to dream. Your next adventure begins long before you ever step on a plane.
